The PE and sport premium is a government grant provided to primary schools in England to improve
the quality of physical education (PE) and sport for all pupils. The main purpose of the funding is to
make additional and sustainable improvements to the PE and sport that schools already offer.
At St Barnabas CE Primary School, our PE and sport premium grant was spent across three main
areas: CPD, internal activities, and external activities.
A key focus was increasing engagement and participation in physical activity, and we have seen a
positive impact in this area through a range of initiatives. The investment of £1,500 in extra-
curricular opportunities, £1,000 in internal sports competitions, and £1,400 on top-up swimming
lessons has increased the level of physical activity and participation in both school and after-school
activities. Furthermore, our investment has had a positive impact on the attainment of our Year 6
pupils, with 80% able to swim 25 metres, use a range of strokes, and perform a self-rescue.
Beyond the direct impact on pupils, a substantial part of our £16,830 expenditure was focused on
staff development and raising the profile of physical education across the school. Our £9,000
investment in Continuing Professional Development (CPD), which included internal learning and
development and the use of external coaches, has had a positive impact on increasing staff
confidence and competence in teaching PE and sport. This has supported whole-school
improvement and helped ensure that the positive changes and opportunities are sustainable for the
future.
