The Governors of St Barnabas CE Primary School are actively involved in the life and work of the school. We support the activities which are happening at St Barnabas as well as providing challenge to enable the school to move forward; recognising achievements and evaluating progress.

The role of the Local Governing Committee is to help the school provide the best possible education for all of our pupils, and to ensure the school meets all its statutory obligations.

The Local Governing Committee is made up of three foundation governors, three parent governors, one local authority governor, one staff governor, five co-opted governors and the headteacher. If you are interested in becoming a governor, please contact school.

Health and Safety Governor

I am the Vicar of St Barnabas Church and a Foundation Governor as part of my work.
Previously I worked for St Michael le Belfry Church in Admin and Finance. I qualified as a Management Account
(CIMA) in 2008 whilst working there.
The school community is such an important place where our children spend such a large proportion of their time.
Engaging in learning as well as being an encouraging and safe environment is so important for our pupils to flourish
into all they can be.
I am a committed Liverpool FC fan, a keen cyclist and a musician.

Heidi Moon – Co-chair governor

I am a qualified primary school teacher with a specialism in special needs-specifically social, emotional and behavioural difficulties and neurodivergence. I have taught in schools throughout York, further afield in Yorkshire, and in London and have worked extensively with children who have been excluded from mainstream education.

I have also worked alongside social workers offering holistic support to families and within metal health services in GP practices and in the voluntary sector.

I became a parent governor at the beginning of 2024. My daughter Bella started in reception the September before this and my son Otto currently attends playgroup.
I became a governor because I wanted to support the school in making sure every child was being offered the best education possible. School is such a key part of a child’s life and I feel that with the right opportunities every child can reach their potential and thrive. Since moving to the area we have loved what a special

place this is and how friendly everyone within the school community has been and I think that St Barnabas has some really unique qualities not found anywhere else in York.
Having worked with children, young people and adults with a huge range of backgrounds, qualities and needs, I hope that I will be able to advocate for the wonderfully unique and diverse community the school serves. I believe that the school has the opportunity to be the heart of the community and celebrate all of the people in it- the children, their families, the staff at school, and any other residents, and I will always aim to ensure that everyone is represented fairly.
I think that it is vital that pupils’ wellbeing is considered as important as their academic achievement and will always ensure that this is considered when decisions are made.
My interests are travelling, learning about other cultures, reading, and I love cars and driving! I am an animal lover and was always keen to move to the Leeman road area so that I could walk my lovely dog, Murphy, along the river every day.

Keira Smith – Co-chair Governor

I’m Kiera Smith, I currently work at Aviva as a People Transformation Partner. Which means I manage Global HR / employee focussed projects across the company.
I am a parent Governor, newly appointed just prior to Christmas. I put myself forward as a Governor, out of interest and also I wanted to understand how the school is run and how it supports not just my child but all children. I’m hoping that my Human Resources and Project Management background could also add something to the school and to parents.

I currently spend any spare time revising and preparing for my final exams and portfolio for my apprenticeship. This doesn’t leave me much time for hobbies or any spare time beyond the crazy demands of my 5 year old, but as a family we do enjoy travelling and visiting and experiencing new places.

Demi Parker – Local Authority Governor
Hello, I am Demi Parker, and I am proud to be a new school governor. I am a mental health

nurse. My experience spans children safeguarding, SEND, operational management within NHS,

which will help me to support the school.
I became a school governor because every child deserves a great education and the right support
to help them learn and grow. My role is to make sure the school provides a safe and welcoming
place for all children and that everyone’s needs are met.
As a governor, I will do my best to make sure every child at this school feels happy, supported,
and ready to achieve their dreams.

I love learning new things myself, and I encourage others to do the same. When I am not working, I enjoy travelling to new places and hiking in

nature, it is a fantastic way to relax and recharge.

I started as a Governor at the school in February 2025 as a co-opted governor having recently retired as an accountant, my last role being with York Museums Trust.

Having had a busy career I now have some time to give back to the community and education. Its importance in the development of our children is a valuable public service. My children and grandchild have all benefited from a good state education and I want to play a part in ensuring this continues.

I have a very strong finance and governance background having worked in the public and private sectors for 45 years.
